Why? Why make them so creepy? All of the puppets with human-like features look like thousand year old corpses.
Jim Henson was a genius but I don't know why he seemed to do that a lot, and in the Dark Crystal as well, the characters were terrifying and unsettling. Nightmare fuel.
Okay, I've heard rumors that the reason for the hideous characters in The Dark Crystal is because the movie was suppose to be an allegory to the evil people who are actually running this world. I watched a video about it a LONG time ago (probably ten years or more) on youtube. It may sill be there, but I didn't look too hard to find it. I did find this, and it goes into some of the elements that that video did. If you watch it I hope that you don't get nightmares.
I can only assume that Labyrinth has similar themes. I actually don't remember much of it. I haven't seen it since I was very young, and it wasn't really one of my favorites. However, I recently found it in a thrift store on VHS, and I bought it. So, I'll get around to watching it eventually.
Thanks I appreciate this. Maybe i was easily frightened as a kid but those Skeksy things on Dark Crystal were just awful. On the other thread I was having a conversation with a known anti-masker so my comments were aimed at that. There are tons of anti-maskers on this website . . .its a thing.
Funny thing about "The Dark Crystal", I remember the hideous villains as being much more interesting and believable than the cute bland little puppets good guys.
Yeah, I remember it that way too. I couldn't wait for the Skeksis and especially the Garthim to appear. They were much cooler looking than the designs for the good guys in this film.
