Farming in Hoosiers

About 45 minutes into the movie, we have the scene where Norman Dale is talking with Myra Fleener at the farm. They are standing around a metal tub, which Myra is stirring with a stick. Not being a farmboy, can anyone educate me on what's going on? Thanks.

reply

At the Fleener farm they are growing sorghum, a type of sugar cane. You see them pressing the sorghum later in the movie. Myra is heating and stirring the liquid that comes from the pressed sorghum so as to make it ready for market.

reply

Yup! That's correct! She is squeezing the sugar out of the sorgham and into a pan of water. She then boils the concoction down until it is a thick syrup. Then she will can it. People around here still make their own sorghum. It is a very common sight to see people preparing it during late Autumn.

Did you notice she's preparing it outside? There's a reason for that. It stinks! It stinks bad. And I'm not too fond of the taste either, but many people seem to like it. It has a very strong flavor. At least I think it does.

You may have noted in that scene Norman asks Myra why she was never married. She replies that one of the things she likes about living in a town like Hickory is that your personal affairs stay personal (or words to that effect). It makes for a nice line but most small towns I have been in are not like that at all. Everyone knows most everyone else and they know your business too.

The interesting thing is Myra later looks into the coaches background and finds out some of his secrets which puts the lie to her nonsense earlier in the film about maintaining people's privacy. I have no idea why Norman finds Myra attractive, she was not a nice person and her personality is irritating as hell.

Many people would say that Norm is not a nice person and his personality is irritating as hell. Maybe that's the common ground and why they like each other.

reply

Norm is hot-tempered and can be abrasive, mostly when others give him reason to be first. He is also charismatic, cheerful, outgoing, and generally likeable.

Myra is an uptight, self-righteous, meddling bitch with a grim, humorless personality. It's hard to believe Norm likes her, except that she appears to be the only woman at the school, and the only female between the ages of 17 and 65 in the whole town.

I've seen this movie many times and love it but always wondered about what they were doing in this scene.

Just wanted to say thanks to danielcc-2 and DavidInIndy for their explanation
