What did Cletus mean when he said he was 'floatin' ???

Someone tell me. This is a big internet mystery.

The screenwriter has said that it is a colloquial term for "meditating."

He had just had a shroom/peanut butter sandwich about 45 minutes before Norman Dale walked in.

It's certainly a quirky moment. The idea of this otherwise square, late middle aged man in 1950s Indiana meditating in his office like he's Timothy Leary or something. If they'd expanded on it a bit, built this sort of new age/beatnik aspect into his character, but it never really comes up again.

He was in poor health, and I'd always assumed this was supposed to be some sort of last ditch way of dealing with it, but it's never explicit.

You're messing with my Zen thing, man!

Yeah it was a real non-sequitir moment.

It wasn't like 70-ish small school principals in 1950s Indiana were heavy into transcendental meditation.

It would have made more sense if he just said, "I was just grabbing a nap, I have been here since 5:30 this morning."
