Passes

Hello, was it 3 passes before a shot? or 4 passes?

reply

In the locker room before the first game:
Norman: "Now you remember to discipline your game. Absolutely no shots until you've passed off four times. Set your offensive patterns before you go to score. All right? Is that clear?"
Huskers: "Yes."
Norman: "How many times are we gonna pass off?"
Huskers: "Four."
Norman: "How many?"
Huskers: "Four!"

reply

Until Jimmy arrives, when the rule becomes "one."

True, but I don't think the "four pass" routine was meant to be a season long command, but used in practice and early games to retrain the free shooting squad into learning how to pass and ball handle, something that would benefit them greatly when playing teams with better defense (like the tournament).

It is bad to drink Jobus rum. Very bad.

It's hair-splitting, but for a coach to say "four passes before every shot" is as bad, or worse, as saying, "I want the first guy who gets the ball to always shoot it."

Norm's "four pass" rule was intended to offset goofball George's practice policy of "get the ball in the air as soon as you can."

Ideally a coach tells his players, "take the first GOOD shot you can get."
