What is it with that ball?

I'm not a basketball guy so forgive a possibly stupid observation:

What is it with Jimmy's basketball when he is shown shooting hoops outside and Coach tells him he does not care if he plays or not?

It's like it has no air in it or something.

Is shooting hoops with an under inflated ball a training technique or something?

The director and writer/producer discuss this scene in the director's commentary on the DVD. The ball is underinflated. This was supposed to make it easier for the actor to make the baskets. They explain, "We helped him along a little bit. We loosened the rim, and we took a little bit of air out of the ball ... [to create a] forgiving ball and hoop." In my opinion, this probably was unnecessary. The guy who played Jimmy was an excellent shooter in real life.

OK-- thanks.

I suppose TPTB on the film thought this was a good idea for the reasons mentioned, but its also VERY noticeable.

Also he was bouncing it on grass. The grass doesn't let the ball bounce back up high the way payment or a gym floor does

Lol anyone notice the OP posted this a day before the 2014-15 AFC Championship Game, a day before Tom Brady supposedly used deflated footballs in that game. LOL. It's like he saw the future.
