What was it they were crushing and then boiling?


On the farm when Dale goes for the invited dinner, they are crushing stalks of something and boiling something else. What were they doing? Working with sugar cane? I grew up around farms and never saw anything like that, of course they may have been dealing with a crop we don't deal with around here.

I doubt sugar cane in Indiana in the fall....more likely making corn syrup maybe?

It's sorghum, grown in south-central Indiana. It can be made into syrup.
