Does anyone recall when Shooter comes stumblem on the court? Then when Coach Dale says to the ref. "It's ok he just the asst. then slaps him (the ref.) on the back.
I belive Coach Dale gets "T'ed-up" for slapping the ref, not because Shooter comes onto the court.
A great scen if you ask me.
He was definitely given a technical because Shooter stumbled out onto the court and Coach Dale said he was his assistant coach.

A drunken assistant coach making trouble on the floor deserves to draw a technical foul. I don't think the slap had anything to do with it. Gene Hackman, if he were smart, wouldn't have admitted that he was the assistant coach ...
A technical foul is given if a coach is on the floor during play. The foul was given due to Norman Dale admitting he was an assistant. No foul would have been called if he hadn't said anything.

What I think is funny is how Norman tries to defend Shooter after the technical foul is assessed. "What are you talking about?! Wait a minute! He just wandered out onto the floor! Oh, don't give me that! Jesus!"
Yeah, come on... drunk, asst. coaches should be given more leeway!
Listen to what the ref says, not what Dale says. The ref says the technical is for the coach being on the court.
