Woody Allen Destroyed the Ice Capades with this Movie

Immediately after that snide remark Woody Allen made in this movie regarding the Ice Capades ("Then there's Nietzsche who claims that everyone lives their exact same lives over again. That probably means I'll have to sit through the Ice Capades again.") The finances and attendance of the Ice Capades plummeted to bankruptcy. Thanks, Woody, you jerk!

I think the decline of the Ice Capades has more to do with changing tastes, than any obscure remark in a Woody Allen movie.

I think it's very unlikely that a casual, funny comment like this was capable of bringing about the end of the Ice Capades, which, after all, managed to keep going for another nine years after Hannah and Her Sisters was released. It's probably fair to say that Woody Allen and the Ice Capades probably had quite different audiences, so it's unlikely that Woody Allen fans were persuaded to stop seeing Ice Capades shows because of this film: they probably never watched the Ice Capades anyway. I also think it's just unlikely that one comment in a film would really have such an impact. It's more likely that he made a joke about the Ice Capades because the tide had already begun to turn and it just wasn't what audiences wanted any more. In the Frasier episode 'The Show Where Sam Shows Up' there's a joke at the expense of the Seattle Mariners. Do you think it had any impact at all on the actual baseball team?
