Tom McLaughlin shoud've directed Part VII
It would be interesting to know what McLaughlin would have done had he been given the reigns to continue the series. I know a lot of people love part VII, but if you take away the Carrie element and the superlative Jason design, what we're left with is a run of the mill formulaic Friday film with nothing much to add other than Kane Hodder's performance and some good kills. McLaughlin was one of the few filmmakers who came to the fold and expanded upon the what the franchise built. He gets credit for injecting humor, but he also created likeable characters that were a little more dimensional than what the franchise was used to seeing. This film also had a charismatic leading man, which was a first for the franchise as we're usually left with a final girl. The police play a significant role, there are kids at camp, and Jason becoming supernatural was handled well when it could have been a huge disaster. It also has wrong man accused elements and some solid performances from its leads. I truly wonder how he would have followed Jason Lives up and what his part VII would have been like had he expended upon the story and tone he set with Part VI. He set the series back on track and perhaps it was a missed opportunity that he didn't return to keep the train from derailing.
