Good question, but kind of ridiculous.

Among kids there's not really any discretion, plus this was the eighties, and the teacher was supervising. You also have to remember the point of this film was that these kids evolve from hostages to these primal killers and in a sense by shedding their clothes and going through the water, they transform.

Dont look too deeply in to it, it wasnt sexually themed, it was just a scene. Sometimes in "America's Funniest Videos" there are videos with little girls without their shirts. To some it's just natural.

Unless I missed some scene, I don't think anyone was exactly "naked." Everyone wore underwear (panties or shorts) while swimming. Only Rachel Ward and the oldest girl Narene had developed breasts, and neither of them were shown in a front view, as I recall.

Of course, since we know of at least two versions running around, there may another one that's less inhibited in the cave scene.

Don't think it would affect the plot either way. Great movie.
