'No Supper!'

Do real life parents actually punish their kids by telling them they don't get to eat dinner for the night?

The scene in this movie when the kid gets introuble and the dad says "no supper," I know it's just a a movie still I thought "wow not having your kid eat as a form of punishment."

It made me wonder if parents actually do this as a form of punishment, just refusing to give them dinner for the night.

"You don't get to eat tonight,"

I can't wait to see some old timers come on here and say "You think that's a bad way to discipline your child? Kids these days have it easy!"

I'm 23 and I think it's fine. Is that weird?

I'm 24 and think it's bad parenting. My parents would have never just denied me of dinner as punishment. They'd deny me of desert, and when you're a kid that's definitely punishment enough.

My very-strict grandparents used to think this was too cruel (on the other hand they were fine with corporal punishment!). I guess it's something we've been debating for generations.

It didn't seem all that rough to me 

Very good. But brick not hit back!

true but he said something insinuating that he was only bringing it because of his mother. But maybe he was gonna do that later anyway, so you're right.

I'm only 29 and I can tell ya I heard this as a child. I really don't understand why it's so bad, you now a child isn't gonna starve after one missed meal right? Honestly your concern seems so unwarranted... Kids are way to spoiled and these politically correct parents are not helping at all. buncha gluten free havin', yoga taking hipster vegan's ruining the youth! Kids don't get punished at all these days! "Won't someone please think of the children!"....hahahahaha You'd swear kids these days were made of glass.

I guess some parents can be this strict and there maybe others who aren't this strict

Some people used to do it at least until the first half of the 20th century, but it has mostly fallen out of use many years ago. In this day and age, denying a child one or more meals can actually get you into trouble (social services and all that). But this film was made 30 years ago and the father, who is clearly old-school in many ways, is probably punishing his children the same way his dad used to do with him in the 40s and early 50s (if we have to assume the character is the same age as the actor playing him: Billy Green Bush was born in 1935).
