Did anyone see this movie in a theater?

I ask because I don't remember it being in theaters, and I specifically recall watching it on Showtime or HBO, at my friend Randys house, during my 86-87 school year. Not really important I guess, but I just wonder if maybe it was a "straight-to-video" or made for cable movie. This may account for the lack of people who ever saw it.

it was shot in the summer of 84. but wasnt released in theaters until march of 86 for about 2 weeks. It played in new york and L.A.. and then shot right to video in late 86. cable in 87.. thats were most people saw it.. hope this helps

I was fortunate enough to have seen this film in 1985, at a screening at the McClure Cinema during the Chicago International Film Festival. I seem to recall it having gotten a favorable response, so I was surprised when it failed to find a wider distribution than it received. There was another great film I saw there that year; “Come and See,” from (then) Soviet Union.

I saw this at the Fox Drive In, Fayetteville NC around late 84/early 85. It was playing with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. How's that for a double feature?

reply

Clever combination. The two films have a similar ending. I wonder why that old film never gets played on TV?

reply

That is a bizarre double bill, but somehow, it works.

The first time I ever saw (or even heard of the movie) was when I was visiting with two friends years back when I was younger. They were big movie buffs sometimes would watch two or three movies non-stop in one night (it would be early morning when we'd be walking home with our eyes bugged out from watching too many) with a brief movie discussion - everything from acting to how/where it was filmed, etc - after each one. They were a bit morbid in their tastes, often choosing dark drama or action or horror movies. That night we watched Class of 1984; The Warriors; and The Boys Next Door.

I would die to see this movie played in a theatre.

Ir played in Boston (for one week) at a small art cinema in 1986. That's how I caught it. No masterpiece but a pretty good movie. It proved Caulfield and Sheen could actually act.

I rented the movie at the same time it had an exclusive in engagement at theaters in San Francisco. weird.

It played in LA and new York city in March 1986, believe it was hitting home video around that same time. Most people caught this movie on late night HBO in 1987 and 1988..

Saw it at the Cornerhouse in Manchester back in 86. Loved it.

This movie was reviewed by noted film critic Vincent Canby in the March 14, 1986 edition of The New York Times, so it did receive a limited theatrical release in new York City.
