But was roy really gay?

Maybe roy really was gay , but didnt know how to express it. I wonder why he was so angry.

reply

Looking throug Roy's eyes.....i'd fake homosexuality to lure the gay guy in to kill him....though i suppose you could be right.

He seemed to be angry at everyone not just the gay guy. If this movie was to be made today I'd say 'yep'. we were being told that Roy was gay. Maybe the movie was ahead of it's time.

He did have a sense of what would be attractive to a gay man and he had an interesting reaction in the bar (as we saw it through his eyes). Maybe he was in love with Bo (but didn't know it/couldn't recognise it) and that might account for his anger at the woman. In different circumstances he'd have been expected to have sex with her too.

If we are expected to see him as gay I'm uncomfortable with the self-loathing he expresses with his violence, but, then again, the movie was made in 1985.

reply

I doubt he was gay,if he was then he must have been in denial.Study the expression on his face when he is in the gay bar,and the guy with the black hair looks at him.Roy seems afraid and discontent with it.

Hell no! I think he was angry because he felt like an outcast. His dad completely ignored him. He struck me as someone who grew up under an abusive and/or alcoholic father.

reply

you know, its funny, they never explained how he got that car. dontt think either one of them had jobs. or they never said.. so i wonder where he got the money for gas and food if they lived in a trailer park, his dad appeared to care more about beer than him.

One of the gayest movies I have ever seen other than Brokeback Mountain.

reply

He's not gay, I think. Just someone who fells a great rage against the entire world. I can understand this. He probably kills the woman because he felt jealousy (after all, she chose Bo, not him).

But this is just my opinion.

We only give her two seconds of pain, while girls like her give us eighteen years of pain.

I don't know for Roy but I think that you're homophobic bastard.

But that is the point MissLovie - it is alluded and subtley suggested throughout the film that Roy has sexuality issues and part of his anger stems from this. He was no doubt brought up in an abusive macho domintated home lifestye. Just because he was with a gay guy doesn't mean that he was attracted too him. Not every straight person will be attracted to every other straight person they meet.

Roy didn't need to rape his victim to feel power over him. He was already psyched up and aggresive enough by dominating him with a good bashing. Most gay bashers are venting their frustration and insecurity on gay victims because of their own state of denial.

Anyway, as Roy is a fictitious character and doesn' really exist and the movie only hinted at the fact that Roy might be gay, who really knows what the real character motivations are except the actor that gave him life and the writer and director. Apparently there is a dvd avaliable with a commentary which might be worth checking out.

I really would'nt know about the sexual habits of serial killers, I haven't studied them. As far as the film is concerned though, when it was made in 1985, it may have been a bit too strong for audiences of that era and also for censorship reasons to show a man on man rape particulary for hollywood. This may be a reason why a gay sexual assualt wasn't included in the film.

Also, Roy was with his friend Bo in the same room and Bo obviously was straight. Roy wasn't about to prove to Bo that he could sexually assault another man and possibly expose his true nature - not cool! Both Roy and Bo were in a sense on different sides of the fence and it wouldn't even have entered Bo's mind to question his friends sexuality & Roy knew this - Bo would have perceived him as straight, albeit culture shock!

reply

I definitely read him as a self-hating homosexual who had a thing for his friend. He also loved to take his shirt off.

reply

I always thought he was...

He picked up the gay guy at the bar with ease , and plus he went crazy when Bo was having sex with the woman he picked up at the bar showing how jealous he was ....remember what he yelled at Bo after he killed the woman ...."YOU WOULD F&CK THAT" ???

He was gay IMO

reply

He picked up Chris at the bar because he wanted to kill him. He was totally repulsed at being hit on by a guy (and being in a gay bar).

When he killed the woman having sex with Bo, it's because he was jealous of Bo not her.

I doubt the filmmakers had any intention of creating a gay character in Roy. He was just a maniac.
