Did anyone else notice this?

I'm not sure if this hasn't been said already and if so, I do apologize. But one thing that's always bothered me about this movie is the dive meet. It just doesn't make sense.

First of all, when Melon first arrives at the college, we can clearly see that it's somewhere around mid to late October by the color of the leaves and everyone wearing jackets and sweaters. Yet every diving scene, it looks like it's mid July. The leaves on the trees full and pure green and everyone is dressed in summer attire.

Secondly, does the diving team dive all year round? When Melon talks to Jason on the phone during the business meeting, it's diving season since Jason is collecting all the diver's towels. Yet it's still going on when Melon has to be retested by all his professors which we are to assume is close to the end of the year. I recall Jason saying to Melon that he has mid terms coming up.. Don't mid terms happen somewhere around Christmas time?

Finally, I'm not an expert on the subject, but does a diving team really have cheerleaders?

Good questions! In the Goofs section, it mentions that the trees have fall colors on them, but in the diving scenes the trees are a healthy summer green.

I've also thought it was CRAZY to show cheerleaders at a dive meet!!! As well as the bleachers area being so crowded.

i watched the movie back in the 90s and again 10 minutes ago.

i was thinking the same thing about the weather! people are walking around in jackets, but then they swim and dive in an outdoor pool.

weird.

My college roommate was a diver for Indiana University and his meets occurred in both the fall and spring semesters.

As for the changing leaves, it's just a movie. Sometimes scenes are shot out of order, and sometimes the weather/season does not perfectly match the timeline of the movie.

Let's take it further....

When was the last time you saw an OUTDOOR diving meet? Or a school with an Olympic size outdoor pool? Now, my knowledge on diving and swimming is very limited, but every meet I've watched on tv and the few I've seen live, theyre all inside. Especially since it's been all but proven on these boards that this college is somewhere in the Midwest. If it was San Diego State or Hawaii it would pass the sniff test. But outside in the Midwest........

SMU has an outdoor diving pool with platforms, and an outdoor Olympic swimming pool. They also have an indoor one for cold weather. (Pool not diving pool.)

reply

Correct lincland- Dallas Texas. Where it's warm the majority of the year- not the Midwest where even the most temperate of cities (e.g-St. Louis) couldn't have an outdoor diving meet

I love critical people. They make the world so much happier.

reply

Even better, I believe the college is in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Not exactly Palm Springs.

reply

The campus scenes were filmed in Wisconsin, but the diving scenes were filmed at a now demolished aquatic center in California.

"Jesus, does anyone?"

Midterms are Octoberish(?), finals would be in December.

Lots of sports start practice before classes start.
