Where was Ripley before she goes to LV-426?
In the beginning, when Burke and Gorman ask Ripley to join the mission to LV-426 and she says she has to go to work. were they in earth?

shareThe Hospital where she wakes up is on Gateway Station, in Earth Orbit.
It is assumed without proof either way that herApartment, and job at the loading docks is also on gateway station as well, but she could as easily been on Earth at that time as well. Since all shots are interior, one never knows.
But yeah, She's back at Earth, either on an Orbiting station or Groundside.
I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!
I've always thought it was just Gateway Station which we see as it would be alot cheaper and easier than showing what Earth was like circa 2179 and Ripley prolly would have gone to wherever her daughter was interred if she were actually back on Earth as opposed to being in orbit.
shareI've always thought of it all just being Gateway Station, in Earth orbit as well.
I only considered the "On Earth itself" angle as I was replying to the OP.
While it very well may be completely aboard the Station, the truth is we only know the hospital was aboard the station.
She could very well have gone planetside after discharge and the inquiry, her Apartment, the loading docks only mentioned and never seen... could all well be on the surface.
In a manner of speaking, this whole train of thought is an analogy as to how everyone got so ingrained into it being "The Company" behind the first film.
There is no direct evidence in the first film that proves it is the company. Its an assumption, Just as its an assumption that everthing was aboard the Station.
And without evidence to the contrary, there is no reason to suggest otherwise. The assumption WORKS. As far as everyone is concerned, it was the company and she is on the station.
Now regarding Ripley, there is still no evidence to the contrary. The assumption that she was always on the station STILL WORKS.
But with the advent of Aliens, the assumption about THE COMPANY, breaks down and no longer works. Thus it must be discarded and another assumption be put in its place which works.

I also always thought it was the Gateway station because I wasn't aware of the situation what Ripley has been doing during the time between she was fired from the company and she decided to go to LV-426 again. Apparently she's been living in the apartment with her cat and working in the cargo docks. It seems like Ripley might have gone back to Earth at least more than 6 months since she had to take the psych evaluation for 6 months and apparently she finished.
shareWeyland-Yutani OMG not hard to spell it.
You gotta stay in your seats until the Sulaco reaches the terminal!
wtf are you ranting on about?
No one has even mentioned Weyland-Yutani, much less misspelled it.

Weyland-Yutani OMG not hard to spell it.
It's actually Weylan-Yutani. Cameron spelt it wrong.
There is an explanation for this, you know.
I believe she's still living on that space station, doing loading dock work.
Get off your soapbox while I play you a tune on the tiniest violin.
I've wondered if Ripley tried to contact her relatives. Sure, her daughter was dead and no grandchildren, but Ripley must have had some more distant relatives. It would make sense for her to contact them. Or was she so damaged from her Nostromo experience that she just avoided any human contact?
shareIn the director's cut when she is told about her daughter she is sitting on a bench with a projection of a forest and recorded birdsong so I think it's safe to assume that they are still on the station.
