I agree totally...This is a thrilling, compelling and intelligent movie crafted beautifully by John Frankenheimer and Elmore Leonard. A true gem that is often overlooked... Frankenheimer was aiming for a comeback picure and unfortunately this did not do well at the box office. I'm not sure if Cannon put enough money into this release. Frankenheimer was relegated into making cable movies later in the decade that brought him critical acclaim.
I would also add To LIve and Die in LA by William Freidkin to the list of great action movies of the 1970's/1980's....
Oh, yeah. To Live and Die in L.A. was awesome. And yes, 52 Pick-Up is way too underrated.
