Refresh my memory - spoiler

Towards the end, Harry offers to give Alan his sportscar - apparently in addition to the ransom.

Wouldn't it have made more sense for Harry to to give the sportscar as the ransom? Was it that way in the book?

I haven't seen the film, but loved the book. There is no offer of the sports car.

...how does Alan meet his end in the book? In the movie, he gets in the sportscar, which is rigged to lock him in and then explode.

In the movie, the offer of the sportscar is like an off-key note - getting Alan to take the car is essential to the plot, but the way it is done makes no sense.

No trouble.
Right, where to start. Looking at the cast for the film it seems that the characters of Ed Jazik (the union representitive) and John Koliba (one of Harry's factory managers) have been left out of the film. Ed Jazik is causing Harry some problems, sewing discord among the workers. John Koliba is causing a slowdown under his instruction. Harry has a word with him and gets him back on track. The next time Ed Jazik comes in Harry punches him out for causing trouble. In revenge Jazik turns up later and breaks one of Harry's car windows.
Toward the end of the book Alan Raimy has a briefcase sent to Harry. Harry sends his secretary out to buy the exact same briefcase. He then spends some time in the workshop of his car factory and makes an exploding mechanism. Alan comes to the factory car park in a van he stole with Harry's wife kidnapped. Harry meets him in the car park with the briefcase full of money. Alan tells him to stop and show him the money. Harry does so and breaks the lock (deliberately). He tells Alan he'll go back inside to fix it. He goes in and swaps the briefcase for the one he rigged up. He takes that to Alan and swaps it for his wife. Alan isn't sure what to do. He suspects something is awry, but the briefcase is right next to him and he opens it. KABOOM! The van and Alan Raimy blow up.
Out runs John Koliba and says, "Was he in it?"
Harry said, "Who?"
John Koliba said, "Jazik, who else?"
They call the fire department.

...except for how they handle the sportscar. Harry convinces Alan that he doesn't have the available cash to pay the full ransom, then they set an amount and a meeting place. During these negotiations, Alan makes a point of admiring Harry's Porsche. With the ransom set, Harry talks to Alan again, and, almost off-handedly, offers him the Porsche.

When they meet, Harry hands over the ransom and the keys, gets his wife back. There is a moment when Alan is considering killing them both, but Harry has anticipated this - he's gotten Alan's fingerprints, and left a note telling all to his attorney. Alan gets in the Porsche, the doors lock, the tape deck plays a "gotcha" message from Harry, and boom.

You can see how it would have made way more sense to make the car part of the ransom.

Frankly, the film of Cin's murder is one of the most gruesome things I've ever seen in a movie.

We're not soldiers and he's not the enemy. He's a pizza man.
