No sir you are not nuts.

Here in australia when the show was running, it was first called Valerie...named after the star. When Valerie harper was fired, it was changed to Valeries family, as it now centered on the family.

Then in the last few years after Sandy duncan had taken her place, it was changed to The hogan family....most likely because the producers wanted to erase any connection with Valerie harper.

At least thats what happened in australia. Don't know about anywhere else.

The show was indeed named "Valerie" when it starred the eponymous Valerie Harper. When Harper was fired from the show at the start of Season 3, the show and network wanted to keep the "Valerie" name included for audience identification, but Harper, understandably, said no. Then, on advice from her lawyer, she allowed NBC, Lorimar & the show to keep the "Valerie" name in "Valerie's Family" for one year on the condition that all parties involved would agree to go to court early through the "rent a judge" system. She figured that, going to court early and winning, would be better for her reputation; otherwise, it would've taken 5 or more years for the case to be settled and she did not want to run the risk of being blackballed for that long. In the TV industry, whatever is said about you, whether true or false, the longer it stays, the more it sticks so she figured it'd be better to go to court early and settle the thing so that she could continue to find work in the industry with minimal damage done to her reputation. After Season 3, the show had to change its name from "Valerie's Family" to "The Hogan Family" since they were no longer allowed to legally keep the "Valerie" name as part of the title. Had that not been an issue, the show would've continued to use "Valerie's Family" as the title for the rest of the show, even if Harper hadn't been on for several years.
