The commentary that Alan Spencer said about Sledge Hammer was interestin

I found it very interesting to hear Alan Spencer talk in the third disc of the first season of Sledge Hammer when Hammer had to play a Elvis look alike. Mr. Spencer mentioned that he sort of attacked Mr. Belvedere by making comments about the show because either Sledge Hammer was on before Mr. Belvedere or Mr. Belvedere was on before Sledge Hammer was.

It was a very difficult time slot for both Sledge Hammer and Mr. Belvedere because you had on CBS Dallas which I was never a fan of the show even though I remember my grandmother and my mom being hooked onto the show when it was on in the late 70's and early 80's. Then on another rival network you had NBC with Miami Vice which I was never a fan of that show for some reason either.

I mainly watched TGIF on Friday nights because they had the cooler shows on. Now I did watch on CBS when The Dukes Of Hazzard was on Friday nights but when they removed The Dukes Of Hazzard then that is when I started to watch TGIF unless if I remember they had Knight Rider on Friday nights and I would watch that instead.

That is why I understand why Sledge Hammer did not last very long was due to its time slot. I am sure if they would have put that show on any other time slot during the week it would have flourished like Mr. Belvedere as well because hardly no one remembers Mr. Belvedere at all. That to me is very sad to hear because I loved that show too!

Ever since Mr. Spencer mentioned that I have been thinking and wondering would we see more of Sledge Hammer if ABC had placed it in a different time slot? What I mean is would it have lasted possibly for 4 or 5 seasons if Sledge Hammer was on a different time slot than on a Friday night?

I could be WAY off here but, personally, now that I can 'look back' at it, I think it's AMAZING Sledge Hammer! lasted as long as it did, and I'm very thankful for that.

To me, it's the sort of show (at least back in the mid 80s, but probably applies today as well) that found it very difficult to find an audience that would 'get' what they were trying to do. I mean Jesus, no laugh track? When is the audience supposed to laugh??? (sarcasm)

In some ways, it's BECAUSE ABCs ratings (overall) sucked so much that Sledge was able to live on for as long as it did. It landed the 'death-slot' against Cosby in Season 2 but at least it GOT a season 2 (and was allowed to continue on for 'almost' a full season, granted with a lower budget and still getting kicked around the schedule).

All said and done, I'm very happy to have 40+ eps of a show as great as Sledge Hammer! to watch today, and with the job Spencer and company did on the DVDs (still the best release I've seen), I can't ask for any more.

I agree, would we enjoy Sledge as much if it had continued on and on?
I think it could have gone another season...maybe. But it's one of those shows that died young and left a good legacy.

I can certainly think of some other longer running shows that just get worse and worse and should have ended after 2-3 seasons.

You are correct because the jokes and some of the things that they might have pulled on the show might get a little old after a while and the different story lines that they would create might not catch peoples attention like they once did before.

I have watched a lot of shows last for quite sometime and do changes to make the show more interesting even though it makes it worse. I will watch shows that are in syndication now and by the time they get toward the end wonder why in the world did I continue watching this show when it seemed as if it got worse toward the end of the running of the show.

I am happy with 2 seasons of Sledge Hammer and still crack up laughing watching it now after so many years.

You are so correct about that because I loved watching Sledge Hammer too and wondered why they moved it for or got rid of it. You are correct that we cannot complain that 2 seasons came out of it but it would have been nice if it could have lasted another year or two you know.
