It really wasn't. The only reason I remember this show is because it was the same name as a huge hit for Peter Gabriel at the time, which if I'm not mistaken they used on the show. If this show was so great, why did it only last two seasons?

Sledge Hammer was a hilarious show, different from any show before or since then (they haven't made any like it) but it didn't get good enough ratings, god knows why, it happens sometimes, so it was axed.

Guys:

'Sledge' Had the misfortune of being put up against 'The Cosby Show'--among OTHER things!

Why the show failed? Poor scheduling.

The first season, he was up against the big Dallas/Miami Vice showdown of 1986.
The final 2 episodes of that season aired on Tuesdays in a cushy slot between "Who's the Boss?" & "Moonlighting", earning monster ratings & a surprise renewal.
Season 2 was against ratings monster "The Cosby Show" & finished dead last as a result.

Comedies without laugh tracks are ratings poison.

Plus, ratings are only a measure of whom watches the show, not its quality. If it were about quality, Friends wouldn't have lasted a half a season.

Skiop, obviously you never heard of The Office, 30 Rock, My Name Is Earl. In fact, the ONLY good sitcoms currently running new are those without laugh tracks. Plus, Friends was great, as was Seinfeld. Though both had laugh tracks, it was a different era. Your 2 paragraphs make your point seem self-contradictory.

Oh it is funny as hell and I loved it when it aired on ABC back in 1986! I wished that it would have stayed on longer though than what it did.
