Where does the name 'Sledge Hammer' come from?

I just saw an episode of an old B&W anthology show called WAY OUT* in which Charlotte Rae (later Mrs. Garrett on "The Facts of Life") references a fictional television character called "Sledge Hammer". But, this show was from 1961!!!!

What's the real origin story of that name?

* Put "Way Out - Death Wish" in your YouTube search box to see the episode. The "Sledge Hammer" reference crops up about 4 minutes in.

There is a phrase...

About as subtle as a sledge-hammer.

Often swapped out for other things like "train wreck", "brick", etc.

Anyway, it's meant to convey something/one being loud, brash, intrusive, violent, etc.
Sound like anyone?

And so, God came forth and proclaimed widescreen is the best.

A Sledge Hammer is a large mallot made of hardened steel. It's a heavy hammer. Sledge is a heavy hammer too.

He also has an image of a sledge on his pistols.
