Before Rachel goes to meet Book in the field near the bird house, she takes off her cap and places it on the table. I recall reading once about the meaning of her action but can't remember what that was. Does anyone know?
shareI'm not going to word it as well as posts I have seen here in the past, but it was along the lines of: the cap symbolizes her religion/culture, and she is putting it off to the side before she goes out to meet up with Book and act on their passions. It shows she is making a very conscious decision.
My own similar take is: think of the expression to "let your hair down" which means to act free of inhibitions. She didn't actually let her hair down, but taking the cap off frees her hair. And in practical terms, it's hard to imagine making passionate love with that prim cap on.
