The movie is GREAT but...

I really can't stand w/ the music :( :(

I found the film to be really average. Perhaps it was different at the time it was released but there are hundreds of very similar films (and plots on TV shows). I don't get why everyone says it's Harrison Fords greatest role... He just seemed like himself. It wasn't bad, just really average.

Really? Name one.

You can't appreciate great acting or storytelling because you're a tasteless heathen. There's a reason this script is taught in scriptwriting schools as an example of perfect pacing and craftsmanship.

Limit of the Willing Suspension of Disbelief: directly proportional to its awesomeness.

I assume you're being a troll but I will:

* The Juror

* Pineapple Express

* Did you hear about the Morgans?

* Sister Act

There are obviously variations on the finer details but the general idea is the same.. someone witnesses a crime, goes into hiding, gets found and then goes on the run. Practically every TV show has done a similar storyline too.

reply

Well not only did all of those come out *after Witness, but most of those are pretty terrible.

Sister Act is a pretty good comedy, but is itself a remake of Some Like It Hot. So if you were going to accuse Witness of un-originality, you would have done better to use that film as an example.

However, the big difference is that the Billy Wilder film is a comedy, whereas Witness is a thriller-drama, and revolves around a policeman protecting a witness, and not a witness evading criminals.

If you read my original post, I think you'll see that I recognised it may have been different at the time but now there are hundreds of films/TV shows using the same premise and so to me, watching the film for the first time now, it seems over-done and boring. I knew how the story was going to end. If it's been done so many times, that is probably an indication that it's a popular storyline and that people enjoy it, but I didn't and so I found the film to be average. It may have been pioneering, but I didn't feel there was anything that set it apart for me to make it different/interesting.

Ok fair enough, but all I'm saying is that just because a film has been copied and redone so many times, doesn't make the original any less valid. We all know how Romeo and Juliet ends, but that doesn't make the actual experience of it any less enjoyable.

I appreciate Witness for the wonderful filmmaking, music score, thematic subtext, as well as the wonderful acting by Harrison Ford and the rest of the cast. And it is after all quite an original film. It didn't win best original screenplay for nothing you know.

Perhaps it's just because I'm not really a fan of Harrison Ford but I didn't find his acting to be wonderful... Maybe he just takes on the role too easily and becomes the person, but it just seemed like he was being himself in a different life. I'm glad people like it, I just don't 'get it'.

the music is silly, the movie is ok but the direction sucks , the end sucks too , they seems to love each other regardless their difference life , plus she was leaving her country at the beginning of the movie so why didnt she move with him ?

reply

Sorry you didn't enjoy the film, but you did misunderstand the beginning. She was not "leaving her country," she was going on a visit to her sister. A change of scene is often beneficial to someone grieving after a death in the family; it helps to break old routines and give the person some space to reflect. She was planning to be back, as the conversation at the train with Daniel makes clear. There is no indication she wanted to leave her community. Even now, 85-90% od Amish young people opt to stay in the community and observe the strict Amish way of life.
