I am still baffled by Rachel's barn

How many floors were there in that thing? How can they climb UP a ladder to get to Book's old blue car, then the car is at ground level? Then Book jumps down two stories and is with the cows which are also at ground level. I am supposing the thing is built against a hill or something, but the area around Rachel's farm looks like a flat valley.
