What are you talking about? They lived in a one-bedroom apartment in a subdivided Victorian. Rose Marie played the owner. Did you not watch the movie?

And there's the fact that construction workers can actually make pretty decent money. Linda being a college student could also be getting financial aid to help pay for things.

At one point, it was hinted that Linda had family money.
So she likely helped out.

Plus, construction workers (especially in the '80s) got paid quite well.
