Scariest movie I've ever seen

What is it about this movie??? That is something I haven't been able to answer over the past 19 years. I'm 25 now and still can't watch this movie by myself all the way through without having stopped it first or leaving the room. Scared, I know, but it's just something about this movie which frightens me to no end. I had a creepy dream about it the night before last and it has me shaking right now, a night later. I wouldn't keep watching this movie if it weren't for Tawny. It's so scary and yeah, I'm sure no one else agrees, but at 25, I still can't sleep. I get so scared at some parts that I cry because I'm frightened. Anyone else like this???

I dunno, but it did the same thing to me for about a year when I saw this movie as a kid. Had real trouble sleeping for months afterward, and 20 years later I'm still pretty iffy on horror movies in general because of it.

reply

I made the mistake of watching it twice on Wednesday and well, I can't sleep right now. I keep looking behind my back and hearing sounds of the movie. I'll go out on a limb and say this is the "Most Underrated Horror Movie Ever". No one ever talks about it anymore. Oh and what happened to the original 1987 cover??? The new DVD cover is horrible looking. I want the old one back or, I'd rather have the one that IMDb has on the "Witchboard" page.

Most Underrated Horror Movie Ever. That is quite a statement. Now I really have to see this movie.

I absolutely agree that it is very underated!

I love this film. It is one of the creppiest, well made films I've seen.

I first saw Witchboard when I was little, hired it many times throughout the years, I'm 22 now and I'm so glad it is on DVD.

Before it came out on DVD, I hadn't seen it for about the last 10 years, because my video store didn't have it any longer. But throughout the years it had always been on my mind. I had a dream about seeing it on DVD and what do you know? it finally came out and with extras too!

I really like this movie a lot. Actually I love it!

It thinks you're pretty creppy too.

I highly recommend it. Personally, it's one of those movies I can never get tired of. In my lifteime, I've seen it approximately 227 1/2 times(the half is because I stopped it once)and never tire of it. You may disagree, but you should definitely see it.

Yeah, its a wicked movie do doubt. I've just watched it for the first time (I'm 28) and it has some really charged up scenes that make your hair stand on end. Cool!

No offense, (don't know why I'm saying that because it's bound to offend someone) but IF this is the scariest movie you've ever seen, you seriously need to watch more horror films. This film is second rate at best. The acting is terrible. The story should have been stronger. Don't get me wrong, it's not the worst film I've ever seen but when I watch a horror film, I expect a good scare and I really didn't get this from this movie, unfortunately. I'll keep looking for the ultimate scare-fest.

It could all get way too cheerful now.

Haven't seen it in years, but I distinctly remember that character, Malfeitor, that SCARED THE HELL out of me everytime we see him. First in the hospital dream sequence, then again as the painting "possesses" Tawny. His voice and his scary appearence just creeps the hell out of me.

I wonder if the actor that played him scares the hell out of people on the street, just walking by.

*I'm the original poster, just using a different screen name*

Just because I said that, you assume I haven't seen a variety of horror movies??? I've seen quite a bit in my 27. Different movies have different effects on different people. What scares you may not scare the next kid or what scares me may not even phase you. When it comes to horror, what "isn't" there has always been what's frightening to me. It also helps with a bone-chilling score to go along. I couldn't care less about storylines, acting, cinematography, monsters, blood, plot, etc. when I'm trying to be scared. I'll worry about that when voting for who the Oscar should be awarded to. No, I didn't take offense and hope you didn't either if you're still around.

I don't care how many you've watched. If you think this piece of crap was scary you need to watch more! There are way better films than this.

What kind of fresh hell is this?

reply

I had to hide behind my hands a time or two in Witchboard, but 28 Days Later is still the scariest movie I've ever seen. I was desensitized at a young age though. My dad read my brother and I IT when we were both under 10.

i have to agree with with northernlad about what he stated :

1 - there are SCARY movies without seeing single drop of blood in the film
2 - '' '' '' '' with full gore /blood /death/jump scares
3 - '' '' fun horror movies to watch and WB falls in catogory # 3
at least that how i can see horror movies i watched since 1972 untill now

of course that might change depend on each person and his experience

witchboard is NOT one of the scariest movies dude
(i mean mentioning this in front of horror buffs ,can result in humilation
to say the least ,sure witchboard is good HORROR flick no doubt
its made in 1986 ,so i suggest you watch older ''spirits /demonic ''movies
im sure if you look them up you will find SCARIER movies than WB

im very sure we have here a lot of horror buff wanna bees
who pretened they can watch old ghost/spirits movies without sweat
but in fact they cant finish the movie unless its afternoon/with friends

TEST your nerves and watch alone these titles after 12 midnight
''the changling ''
'' the entity ''
''ghosthouse '' A.K.A La Casa 3

they are not the best horror movies but sure it can change
wannabies's ''best horror movies''prospective for good measure
so i recommend digging old horror films before watching movies made
after 1985 ,

good luck hunting gems

That's gotta be it. I would hope so anyway. How in the hell can anyone call this scary? Yeesh! lol

I'm not sure how, but these filmmakers managed to make even a cemetery not creepy. The whole movie was lit like a sitcom set. Scariest movie you've ever seen? In a year that included Aliens, The Hitcher, The Fly, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, and Pretty in Pink, this wasn't even the scariest movie of 1986. Not by a long shot. And no, for those of you that will try to argue this angle, it wasn't suspenseful, either. An embarrassment to the horror genre. Malice, the only thing I'll agree with you on is that I wouldn't have kept watching if it weren't for Tawny, either.

I don’t think I have ever been as scared as I was after first seeing Witchboard. Unfortunately, the first time I saw it was in the third grade. Now, seventeen years later, I’ve seen it so many times that it’s about as frightening as the Brady Bunch episode where Greg’s hair turns orange. But looking at the movie carefully and objectively, I can imagine it being pretty scary to most first time viewers. It's pretty hard for me to gauge the level of scariness because obviously a twenty-six year old is not going to react the same way as I did when I was nine. Anyway, it is a great underrated movie, and if you’re one of the thousands of mislead automatons whose answer to the “what’s the scariest movie of all time?” question is "The Exorcist," then Witchboard is definitely for you.
