Zarabeth...annoying as Hell?
Discuss.
shareLike, Oh my God!!! Zarabeth turned into my favorite character of the movie. At first I thought she was annoying, but after a while you could see that she really actually cared about what was happening and wanted to use her abilities to help. And then she gets impaled (oops... spoiled it) in a not so nice way making her even more of a sympathy character. So she was a little goofy and talked like a Moon Unit Zappa/Urkel hybrid. But really, she was funny and good natured and compassionate, and her character helped the other characters understand the danger in what was happening. Cut her some slack guys!
... just a little psychic humor... Ha haaa!
I also liked Zarabeth for the reasons you described.

Since my family watched this film back when it hit HBO in the late Eighties, "Just a little psychic humor!" has been one of our favorite expressions! To this day, if someone makes a joke that doesn't go over or we're chatting about the occult (which happens in our family a lot), that line is going to be heard!
This is what made us Kathleen Wilhoite fans, and we've followed her career faithfully. As for Zarabeth: She undoubtedly is my favorite character in this film, and I LOVE her scenes! I think Kathleen does a great job of shifting from zany, offbeat medium to severely frightened woman! Her death always seems like a gut punch because she IS such a vivid character, so full of life. I wish that she had survived for the sequels. You have to admit that she's absolutely nothing like Tangina yet has her own quirky charm. I loved her repeated painful attempts at humor because I know people who are like that. Zarabeth (I can't hear that name without thinking of Spock in "All Our Yesterdays") has a thudding sense of humor, but she makes me laugh every time I watch this film. This evening, it's been on the Chiller Channel twice and is on right now. I even videotaped the Zarabeth portion for convenient playback.
I want to know if a designer came up with her outfit or if she had input on putting that ensemble together. My mom and I were betting that Kathleen had a lot to say about it.
Again: If only she had survived...

HORRIBLY annoying...almost made me turn off the movie. Having the character just be "quirky" would have been fine, but she was TOOOOOO over-the-top. The hair, clothes, jewelry, way of speaking, lines...all of it was just a big jumbled up mess. I rank her character right along with the wheelchair guy from the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" as 2 of the most annoying characters in cinema history.
I think Zarabeth is awesome!
