2 young guys create a paedophile using a computer!?!?!

Making Gary and Wyatt 16 and 15 was a bit sick - they should really have been say collage / university students around 18/19 minimum, just so there wasn't the creepy side to Lisa.

After she kisses Wyatt and says "You sure your only 15!?" - i dont care how hot she is that lines just wrong!!!!

The he wakes up in her underwear and apparently fell asleep 10 seconds into her "gymnastic routine"??!!

Lisa is a genie, not a human... ergo, human pedophilia norms don't apply.

besides, it was more like therapy.

But, it's every teenage boys fantasy to have the woman of their dreams. It's not like she *beep* them.

Times were different back then. I doubt that if, say, Angelina Jolie was created by Justin Beiber and that screeching Fred character from Nick, that the public would be comfortable with her teasing and tempting them nowadays. Though I always felt that AM Hall came off in his 20s in this film.

"If I had ya where I wanted ya, they'd be pumpin your ass full of formaldehyde!"

reply

Anthony Michael Hall was 17 and Ilan Mitchell-Smith was 16 at the time, Kelly Le Brock was 25, It's just a MOVIE!

I miss those days... none got upset for such little things...

Guess there really are people who act worse than 12 year olds.

reply

i can't tell who these offneded people are. jealous guys on the outside looking in? prudish women?

i know what my reaction was then...and what it is now.

I was in high school in the late '80s and as I recall, many girls I knew had boyfriends who were in college. There was no internet back then, so there wasn't the easy access that sexual predators have now. It wasn't uncommon for men in their early 20s to date a teenager. It was kind of a gray area. The cultural taboos weren't nearly as strict as they are now. As long as you were like college age and the girl was at least 16, it was considered not a big deal.

reply

Graduated in 83... when I was a teenager many of the 14/15 year old girls had boyfriends that were older boys 18-2*... it was a commonly accepted fact. Of course, it was a lot of farm girls and 'town' boys. Whatever.

reply

Graduated high school 88, in Kansas no less. And this was not a thing.

People occasionally got in the paper for boinking underage girl/boyfriends, yes, even back then. If anything, more conservative culture so less accepting when found out.

And, we all knew the same stories about creepy people in vans, even though there were just as few stranger abductions, before the internet magically changed everything. We still had phones, visits, mass media, etc.

Do you guys not realize that a pedophile is actually - a person who's sexually-excited by pre-pubescent kids? Both of the boys have been through puberty, however, so either way, yo ucan't rightfully accuse of pedophelia.
But yeah... I'd have looooved to see a scene where Lisa tries to seduce one of the boys :P and they freak out. Or maybe they go as far as touching her breast or something. It makes sense that she simply doesn't know what's socially-acceptable in the world she was brought up in. THe knowledge they put into her was very minimal, not about social values.

A lot of ignorant people think that a pedophile is anyone over 18 who's attracted to anyone under 18.

reply

How did they do it with an '80s computer? Was that a Commodore 64?

reply

Nah, it was a Memotech MTX512, which is even worse!

Make tea, not war.

reply

it's not the computer, it's when they hooked the clamps up to the picture of a missile on the cover of time magazine that did it

even today's computers can make genies

getting back on topic, it's not just that this was the 80s, this is a double standard that has been going on forever

if it had been two gay 15 year olds who created a man, that never would have flown

or two 15 year old girls who created a man, same thing

2 boys and an older woman? hot!

reply

You made a couple good points.

You left out one possible scenario. What if two teenage girls created a woman?

reply

i left that out because it would probably be "ok" by the same standards that be

i could just picture someone like howard stern (and his imitators) saying "that's hot"

The reason for statutory rape laws isn't because it's inherently evil for, say, a 15-year-old and a 25-year-old to touch skins, but rather that, in the real world, the contexts for such relationships just about always involve an unhealthy element of power disparity/control. (Viz., teachers/coaches and students, employers, etc.) Such sex, however consensual, is criminalized (whereas minor-on-minor sex isn't) because the potential for psychological harm is simply too great to ignore. (Look up "Age of consent" on Wikipedia, however, and you'll find that many western European countries put the number at 14, i.e., younger than both the movie's characters.)

Technically speaking, Lisa is less than a day old when she makes out with Wyatt, which just goes to show how absurd it is to take this movie too seriously. In the TV show adaptation, TV-Lisa refers to herself as a genie, and in the theme song to both properties, Oingo Boingo's narrator says he "doesn't know" if his "creation" is even "real".

At this point, we'd do well to note that "Twilight" gives us a man of more than 100 years sexing up a newly-turned-eighteen year old, which, even if his body appears younger in human terms than Lisa's, is far ickier... and that series has managed to attain considerable popularity nonetheless. Also, Jake Ryan in "16 Candles" may only be a few years older than Molly Ringwald's heroine, but he's obviously far more sexually experienced, and people were fine with that, too. (Also, AMH totally commits date rape in it, which is played for laughs.)

Bottom line is, the potential hookup scenario in "Weird Science" is a total fantasy one, in which the "older" (again, not literally) partner simply doesn't exist to society, thereby making the potential for unhealthy control/psychological abuse pretty much nonexistent. In other words, it would have been perfectly healthy for the boys to hook up with her.

C'mon dude, this was 1985. Long before the Political Correctness Police went around propagating the lie of false equivalency that an adult female having sex with an underage male was the same as an adult male having sex with an underage female.

reply

the lie of false equivalency that an adult female having sex with an underage male was the same as an adult male having sex with an underage female.
That's true, it's not equivalent, because teenage girls are a lot more mature and intelligent than teenage boys. The law should only apply to boys, because their brains are still underdeveloped at that age, while girls the same age have brains that are much more advanced.

Please change you user name. No one that post such an inane comment should ever be allowed to even listen to Van Halen. You are a disgrace to the Van Halen name. Go listen to some Mike Jackson, you babbling twit.

reply

Not to be nit-picky but this wouldn't qualify as pedophilia anyway.

My rhymes are so potent that in this small segment I made all of the ladies on IMDb pregnant.

reply

It's not nit-picky at all. It's simple fact. What OP is trying to make a deep political point about is not pedophilia in any sense of the word. It's actually an opportunity to lay a hot chick that most teenage boys would give their eyeteeth for :) And to throw out that double standard everyone is so fond of bringing up, there are some teenage girls who would not complain in the least if their hunky a** computer creation gave them some.
