While I like The Avengers, Whedon is and always has been a overrated hack.
That's pretty much how I feel. Although I haven't seen The Avengers, I have liked a few of his things. None of his work has been very original at all though. Every single thing of his I've seen, that he's written, are like patchworks of other movies/shows. So yeah, he's a bit of a hack, but a somewhat gifted hack, identifying the things others did that worked and incorporating them into his own material. What makes it somewhat annoying though is how he acts so self-important and smug.
I think his fanbase has gone to his head. I'm talking about the really rabid ones who refuse to believe that anything he does is less than genius. Whedon could release an hour long movie that just consisted of a monkey throwing feces and some of those people would proclaim it a masterpiece and say the rest of us "just don't get it". He acts like he's the leading authority on anything sci-fi related, but pretty much everything he's done has just been continuations of other people's work.
And then when something doesn't work, it's never his fault. He threw everybody that worked on Alien Resurrection, from the cast to the director and composer, under the bus for how crappy it was. As if he wrote a good script and everybody but himself was to blame for it. But take away all the other stuff, and it was still a sh!tty script with a dumb plot. I'm not sure what actors, directors and composers COULD have made a decent film from the source material.
