Joss Whedon really hates this movie.

While a lot of people happen to like this movie, a billion dollar director and writer, and general comic book enthusiast, by the name of Joss Whedon frankly detests it.

Actual quote-

"I hate Weird Science not a little," he said. "I find it offensive. The boy fantasy of building a girl. Obviously, we were doing the nasty version of it, because I find it grotesque."

To be fair, while the concept is juvenile and a teen boy's fantasy, Hughes did give the boy creation personality and didn't just have her pose for the camera every ten seconds. Give him credit for that.

Thoughts?

Joss Whedon is a whiney PC b****

Those are my thoughts.

Just another example of a guy in Hollywood who is good at making entertainment, who then overestimates himself and thinks he has anything valuable or interesting to say about society.

joss whedon makes really good stuff, but he's a complete jerk

I love Whedon's work and I enjoy this movie, so I don't agree with his opinion. But I'm not going to call him a jerk for it. You can be respectful toward and still disagree with people. Just sayin'.

Wait a minute, wait a minute... Wait a minute. This coming from the guy who had the Buffy bot, creayed the disaster that was Dollhouse (which is pretty similar in this regard), and also Mr. Universe's Love Bot??? I generally really like JW and a good chunk of his work. But wrote! What a bunch of self-righteous assclown!!! Clearly he didn't get the point of this movie. I've lost some respect for him just now. :(

The link doesn't work. I understand Joss' comments. Did he work on Weird Science? For me, movies are about escapism. I was about 16 when I was watched this and it was my fantasy to meet the perfect older woman, too. It's interesting to see that played-out on-screen.

Joss has a few episodes where guys create women.

While I like The Avengers, Whedon is and always has been a overrated hack.

That's pretty much how I feel. Although I haven't seen The Avengers, I have liked a few of his things. None of his work has been very original at all though. Every single thing of his I've seen, that he's written, are like patchworks of other movies/shows. So yeah, he's a bit of a hack, but a somewhat gifted hack, identifying the things others did that worked and incorporating them into his own material. What makes it somewhat annoying though is how he acts so self-important and smug.

I think his fanbase has gone to his head. I'm talking about the really rabid ones who refuse to believe that anything he does is less than genius. Whedon could release an hour long movie that just consisted of a monkey throwing feces and some of those people would proclaim it a masterpiece and say the rest of us "just don't get it". He acts like he's the leading authority on anything sci-fi related, but pretty much everything he's done has just been continuations of other people's work.

And then when something doesn't work, it's never his fault. He threw everybody that worked on Alien Resurrection, from the cast to the director and composer, under the bus for how crappy it was. As if he wrote a good script and everybody but himself was to blame for it. But take away all the other stuff, and it was still a sh!tty script with a dumb plot. I'm not sure what actors, directors and composers COULD have made a decent film from the source material.
