Borna Virus is real, and was first discovered in horses
in Borna, Germany. It does infect people, and causes
psychological and behavioral changes. It's found in
a substantial portion of people with organic mental
illness, and it is transmissible. You do not want
to get it.

Dr. Fairchild actually mentions that particular case. He states that they simply transplanted the virus into a bacteria that would ensure high transmission rates to weaponize the thing. Not sure if this can actually be done, but it was a nice touch to see that the disease was actually real. And by "nice" I mean scary as hell.
