Geraldine Page was great in this.

I was absolutely stunned by Page's performance in this film. For many years I thought that Page should have won the oscar for her small but brilliant performance in The Pope of Greenwich Village. While I still love that performance it doesn't even come close in comparison to her superb acting in The Trip to Bountiful. Geraldine Page will always be remembered as one of the greatest female actors and her work will always be remembered as being flawless.

I could not agree more!! She was absolutely stunning in this film. You forgot she was only acting in many scenes, and that to me is one sure sign that it is an incredible acting performance!

I also agree that Oscars do sometime go to actors that don't seem to deserve them, as do Emmys and Grammys.
Page deserved that Oscar, and then some!

There are some great comments on this on the "Return to Bountiful" extra on the DVD about her performances, The guy was saying that she would do a scene slightly different each time, from sad to funny etc, and let them pick which one worked in editing. The other actors also said she would do a move that they didn't know about, like touch them, and just blow them away, while they were trying to do their part, and she was forcing them to make it even more real!
