How does this version compare to the 1950s version?

I've not seen the original yet. Which version, in your opinion, was better?

Sorry, I have not seen another version. Is that the television 1953 movie you write of? It starred Lillian Gish I read but I have not seen it and do not think it is available on dvd. I couldn't find that version on Netflix. Was there another big screen version?

It must have been good, they say on the commentary that they felt that they couldn't possible make this unless Lillian Gish gave her approval.
She had defined the part on stage.
Of course that didn't stop Ms. Page!
