Oscar for Ms. Page

Does anyone remember at the Oscars , when F Murray Abraham presented the best actress oscar, he didn't come out with Ms. Page's name right away. He first said "The award goes to the greatest actress in the english language..."

The great and also nominated Ms. Bancroft was just a little bit taken aback with his preamble.

I saw that on this Oscar tape and it was so well said and deserved. Geraldine Page is one of the greatest actresses ever and it is sad that she does not get the recognition she deserves. She made less movies than Meryl Streep, Bette Davis, etc and holds 8 Oscar Noms- What does that tell you !

reply

I have that on tape as well, and I think that all of the other actresses nominated (Jessica Lange, Anne Bancroft, Meryl Streep, and Whoopi Goldberg) knew who he was talking about as he said that statement...and from the looks of it they all looked very happy that Mrs Page finally won...she was the sentimental favorite going in, and was the favored to win. Jessica Lange can be seen mouthing - Geraldine Page - before her name was read by Mr Abraham.

No, no..."cruelty." I always think that has a nobler ring to it.

Oscar always takes in emotional factor. Personally , I think Meryl Streep's beautifully understated and mesmerising performance in Out Of Africa should have won her another oscar...
Anyway, awards are just awards.

and i can see nothing wrong with that
especially since ms page really did deserve her statue.

anyway, i have to say this was one of the toughest actress categories in many years, i SO love meryl streep and her performance in out of africa was really outstanding, as well as whoopi goldberg, who was so deserved to win too.

haven't seen the other 2, but from these 3 nominated actresses,
anyone, i mean ANYONE would deserve to win.

but i'd go for ms page anyway
her work was terrific and her overdue state gave her the edge.

I've seen every performance of every actress that year and hands down, Geraldine Page gave THEE BEST performance by an actress that year. The "Trip to Bountiful" is a beautiful film and Ms. Page truly deserved that Oscar! I remember distinctly when she won and I was so happy. Here is how I would have ranked the other nominees:

2. Jessica Lange
3. Meryl Streep
4. Whoopi Goldberg
5. Anne Bancroft

Oh, yeah, I remember that night, because as much as I love Meryl Streep, I was hoping for Geraldine to win.

Mr. Abraham with theatrical emotion says "I consider this woman the greatest actress in the English language!" As he said that the pictures of each nominee were up on the screen. Meryl Streep looked a little puzzled, you see Jessica Lange say 'Geraldine Page' to Sam Shepard. As he mentions Ms. Page's name Anne Bancroft with a smile, whispers something to Mel Brooks. All the nominees look happy for Ms. Page, especially Meryl, who begins to standup. Ms. Page is the only one that seems to be caught off guard, she makes a hand gesture like "oh no!" She starts to look for her shoes, everyone around her are giving her a standing ovation, Jon Voight, a Best Actor nominee that year (a little girl next to him, I'm pretty sure, is Angelina Joli), looks down and begins to laugh as Geraldine is putting on her shoes. Great moment as the show's director switches to a high wide shot and you see Ms Page walking up the steps looking regal, Mr. Abraham kneels to kiss her hand before giving her the Oscar.

Oh, God... I've seen it, live on tv, that night. But I was very young and I was in love with Meryl (still am), so I didn't really enjoy the moment. Now, having seen Geraldine Page in some films, I wish I could see that Oscar moment again. As much as I love Out of Africa and Anne Bancroft, I think it was a well deserved award for Geraldine. She was OUTSTANDING!
