It's fairly obvious that the action is set in the 1940s, judging by the fashion and cars. But when specifically? I have seen this movie several times and never actually catch a date or year (either in a screen title or mentioned in dialogue.) I see more and more in this picture each time I watch it.
I think txfilmfan is correct as I did not notice any 1948 Chevys or Fords in any of the scenes.
Plus it was at least after the war because automobile production did not start til about 1946 or so. There were several 1938 Fords I noticed as I had a two door coupe I bought for $350. and drove it to high school in the 1950's.
Worst mistake I ever made was selling it in 1954. Mint condition with only 37,000 miles on a short block V-8 engine and not a scratch on it anywhere.
And-- Truman was mentioned as president in one scene which would have put him in his third year in office in 1947

Say what? The car industry had been in effect in the US since the turn of the 20th century. Henry Ford introduced the assembly line in 1913, which reduced the time it took to build a car from 12 hours to 2 1/2 hours. Thus, mass production.

They mean AFTER the war. DURING the war, every bit of materials that could go toward the war effort did just that--tires, metal, nylon, anything that could help us win the war.
