Magnificient Acting

This was the very first movie I ever rented when I got a VCR back in 1987, and just bought the DVD last week. The little nuances that Geraldine Page gives Carrie Watts should be studied in acting and film schools. Notice how she stares into the sky and breathes the air in Bountiful at the end of the film; the scene that shows her smiling looking out of the bus window on her way out of town, both scenes have no dialogue, but she is acting with every bit of her being. She deserved the long overdue Oscar she received for this film. If you haven't watched this film, check it out.

It's an excellent movie, and the Cynthia Clawson song is nice. It's such a quiet movie that you might not even notice it if you happen to catch it on TV. I doubt that the pedal tractor should have been shown in the old house for being in 1947.

I agree this is a powerful film and should be watched over and over again and that Geraldine Page's depiction of Carrie Watts is astounding.

I have also bought the dvd collector's edition made a few years back. I enjoy the many interesting behind-the-scenes comments from the director and writer, especially on how Geraldine Page had to be filmed.

According to the director, she was very creative but very inconsistent in her interpretations of Mrs. Watts in the various shoots of a scene. Sometime she would play a scene humorously and sometimes sad, drove him and her fellow actors nuts I guess. However, he gave up and just kept all the different interpretations of each scene and pieced together a powerful film. He seemed pleased that eventually he had so many interpretations to choose from.

One scene in particular is where Mrs. Watts kisses Jessie May by the old house in the closing moments of the film. Miss Page had not done this in any previous take and Carlyn Glenn was taken totally by surprise. He kept that take because of Carlyn Glenn's priceless expression.

The score is magnificient too and so simple; It is really, except for one instance somewhere in the film, that same beautiful hymn, Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling, played fast, slow, somewhat jazzy, whatever the mood requires.

Page's performance in this film is, in my opinion, one of greatest performances in film. Each time I've watched it, she's reduced me to tears.
