why was lowe trying to stop the lynch mob?

was it because he was scared he'd get killed or was it for moral/religious kind of reasons?

I know there wouldn't be a movie if he did, but I don't get why he didn't lock himself up somewhere when the moon was full. But like someone else said, once he lost his eye, he kind of lost his humanity with it.

How did he try it? Did he lock himself in a cage? What happened?

Lowe skips town to Portland and checks into a hotel during the full moon.

then he ended up killing that one guy from town that was there with his mistress anyway.
