a question about the murder *spoilers*

why did his friend brady die? he didnt even do anything, he was just out flying a kite. and the priest said he would "never deliberatly hurt a child" when he was talking to corey haims character in the borded up tunnel
also i though it was funny when i saw the guy from "Lost" was the sheriff haha

After the whole Stella/ Milt murder thing... (she was committing suicide, he was spreading herpes around town ... it's in the book) the werewolf went crazy. I liken it to bloodlust.

According to the book Brady was disemboweled... which is kudos to the filmmakers for not actually showing that. It would have been too much.

I think therefore I drink.

Keep in mind it was Reverend Lowe who said he wouldn't deliberately harm a child. The wolf, on the other hand, is a different personality and the man has no control over the wolf in most stories. If Reverend Lowe could've stopped himself from killing Brady, he would have, but Brady chose to break curfew.

reply

He didn't say "deliberately", he said "willingly". Which means he won't unless he feels he doesn't have a choice.

Werewolf's gotta eat.

Maybe because Brady was a "bad kid" around town. He was a trouble-maker, we find that out in the first scene where he goes out of his way to ruin the sister's clothes and terrify her, and laughs his ass off when she runs away crying.

I don't think Brady was a "bad kid" around the town. He was just a little mischievous that's all. He didn't deserve to die. I do think Jane kind of overreacted to the snake. It wasn't even poisonous. Marty said it was a gardner snake or something of that nature.

Trying to find reasons why murder victims deserved to be killed is a bit sick isn't it?

Badguy is killing folks. Why would you blame the victims? Is it a woman's fault she's raped? o.O

reply

But that is why he committed the murders, at least the first couple anyway. He even admits to it.

I was just wondering the same thing... why Brady? Once we find out who it is and what his motivation was, we know why most of the people were killed off by him.

Except Brady.

And what's this whole thing with Milt spreading herpes around town? Was that in the script but not used? And was he killed originally?

Apparently the herpes bit was in the original story. It obviously doesn't apply to the film itself.

I just assumed in the film that the werewolf killed the older guy at the beginning because he was a drunken slob and then the young woman because she wanted to commit suicide. He saw them as unclean sinners and decided to use his powers to "do good" and save their souls.

After those two, however, he became more and more enslaved to his wolf side and couldn't control himself. Grady got killed simply because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I also think that's why the preacher tried to stop the lynch mob from going out into the swamps... he didn't want to kill all of them but knew that he would once his wolf side took over. By the end he's totally lost his grip and wants to snuff out Marty and his family to cover his tracks.

Exactly.
Marty tells his uncle that the closer to the full moon, the more the 'werewolf' side takes over. The human side of Reverend Lowe wasn't in control when he killed Brady.
And I agree about the mental state part. It appeared that Reverend Lowe was literally being driven insane by his evil werewolf side. By the time he attacks Marty, his sanity (and human side) is almost non-existent.
The good part of the reverend is gone forever.

I always thought that was a great scene. To go from the boy flying the kite in the sunshine to the suddenly eerie music and the cop carrying the same kite awash in blood splatter. The cop just sitting down in shock, praying, and the pile of carnage (what's left of the young boy) off in the distance by the lake. A very well-done scene in a very underrated film. Corey Haim did well here and the main charachter as well.

I liked the idea of him at first trying to justify himself by his victims being deviants and sinners which clearly got less and less accurate as he keeps going on killing to the point where as described he pretty much was nuts in general.

I think it's just a case of Brady being at the wrong place at the wrong time. It was getting late, he probably stayed out until it was dark and by the time he realized it was late, the reverend was already a werewolf and out prowling in the area where Brady was--the beast saw some food and went for it.

This is the answer, I think.
