Your Thoughts on the Final Voiceover

Where Jane says she couldn't always say "I love you, Marty," but that now she could and adds, "Good night."

I wondered if that meant the movie was a "rememberance" by Jane at Marty's funeral ("Good night.")

Your thoughts?

You're too pessimistic ;) for me the narrator is just saying goodbye to the audience, think about "Black Sabbath" by Mario Bava

reply

No, she's not saying he's dead.

"It's Minnie Pearl's murder weapon."

Whew.....maybe I was being too morbid, thinking of the real time death of Corey Haim. I really like "Silver Bullet," even more than the book, which is extremely rare for me. I like to think of everyone in the "family" as doing real life stuff...graduating, retiring, getting married, having kids....

Well, to be fair there are a lot of people who have questioned the intent of the comment. But I never took it as a statement implying death. :D

I thought the same thing; it sounds like a final goodbye. Just something about the way she speaks about him, just makes me think he's no longer around... It's open to interpretation, though.

I also thought the final voiceover had a past tense feel,
and that the "good night" implies Marty was gone. Maybe that
sounds pessimistic, to me it just has a nostalgic quality.

Sounds like he died to me too

reply

I felt the entire narration implied that he died. After all, it's his sister telling a story that probably should've been told by Marty himself.

Why was she recalling this story as a narration at this time? To me, it always seemed like she was reflecting on his importance to her, and their relationship.

Yep...that's exactly what I thought. Of course, then, I thought I may have been overthinking it, which brought about my original post. Glad I wasn't the only one who thought it was a sort of memorial/tribute.

I too had the impression that he may have died and has always wondered if that's what she meant. I don't think it's being pessimistic because she was talking in past tense .Plus I've seen some movies where the person is remebering someone. So I guess it can go either way.

I just assumed he died. I cant think of any other reason to have the sister narrating and that final cryptic statement.

Oh no! We broke The Emperor's favorite vase playing basketball in the house!

I didn't really think about it, but I guess you could be right. Like others said, there was something final and yet nostalgic about her final line.

I didn't really like the narration though. It didn't fit in with the rest of the movie.

I don't think so, Tim.

Now that you mention it, the whole voiceover seemed kind of out of place. The story didn't need it. Maybe its purpose was to examine the sometimes contentious relationship between siblings and that with Marty's passing she could admit to sometimes not loving him? Hmmm...not exactly what you'd be accustomed to in a horror story.
