Kate Mulgrew

Wow, I have to say that I found her acting in this movie was like experiencing chalk grating on a blackboard.

Opinions anyone?

I reviewed this in college and found her "flat and uninteresing as both heroine and damsel."

Agreed. I never warmed up to her role as a Starfleet captain on Star Trek: Voyager. I don't know if it's acting ability or just her personality type.

Couldn't disagree more. Her character may not have been perfectly written, but she was great. Actually, the only unmemorable character/actor in this movie is the main villain.

I saw this movie at the time when I wasn't even aware of her Star Trek role. She caught my eye (and ear) immediately in this movie because of her performance. Once I got around to see Voyager, I was still without a clue that she was in the series, however, once I saw her in Voyager, I immediately remembered seeing the actress before in this movie.

I am watching this for the first time. As much as I really love Voyager and Kate in it, the grating voice in this movie and the first season of Voyager really are annoying.

That being said, she really has grown as an actress. Watch her in Orange is the new Black or listen to her read NOS4A2 by Joe Hill. She has done a marvelous job in both.

I can see where you're coming from, but since I love her energy and unique voice in all its lovely (noise to some, music to others) iterations I can't agree when it comes to her performance here. :)

Thanks for the recommendations.

Yeah, didn't like her from the git-go. That voice and that tucked-in chin always bothered me. She's only 10 years older than I am, and I saw this in the theater when I was a horny 20-year-old, and I wasn't even remotely attracted to her. Ever. Not a good female lead.

If I saw this during the year of it's release I probably would have found her just as irritating then as I do now. As for her sudden fame and fortune as a lead in Star Trek franchise spin off, my best guess is that mostly women tapped into this series and they judged her by a different criteria, to say the least.

Her character is supposed to be the love interest but that really doesn't happen.

First saw her on Ryan's Hope and Mrs Columbo. She was fine; not spectacular, but did her job. However, sexy was never a term I would apply to her, so she wouldn't leap to mind as a love interest. It doesn't really matter, as the character is never written as a love interest. She does come across like most of the ambitious female officers I encountered, in the military: competent, capable, and always struggling to make their voice heard.

I do find her voice annoying, though, in this film. Not so much in earlier parts; but equally so in Voyager (which I dropped not long into the first season). Haven't seen her in anything in recent years, so I can't judge.
