... after Lazlo explains the potentially nefarious purpose of the laser? I typically fast forward through the rest (save for the Kent-God scenes and ending).

Not really. It's pretty important because it exposes Hathaway's purpose and sets in motion the whole revenge plan.

That part is important b/c the movie switches gears right there.

Some reviewers felt like the movie just turns into another revenge comedy there, but there had to be some tension to carry it to its conclusion. It's not the strongest part of the movie, I'll admit, but I think it works ok.
