More like Rah-n, I think - certainly not as short as "I ran down the road". The 'n' is a mora of its own. But not so long as to rhyme with Genghis Khan. Hmm, it's sort of halfway between the two.

You pronounce it Ra-n. In Japanese pronounciation, every syllable has the exact same length(unless it has been extended or doubled by an additional kana), so you pronounce "Ra" and then "n". With the "Ra" being a very soft sound and the "n" rather unvocalized.
It translates to "conflict".

"Japanology", that's a funny word, how was it defined? Language and culture? History? Sociology? Must have been very interesting, anyway. I am only doing language study, formally, but some of the people in my class are doing cultural or business modules as well. Of course we all pick up a lot of the cultural aspects as we go.
shareJapanology is the blanket term for every study relating to Japan(also the term generally used by scientific journals). It generally(as does my BA) includes intensive language classes, culture, history, sociology and history - and then you can specialize as you please. I know people specializing on Japanese Comedy, for example.
