Honestly, Nakadai's presence in Ran has been burned into my consciousness, so I have I hard time imagining Mifune. It wouldn't have been bad thing I suppose, but a highly unlikely reunion. Nakadai was definitely a better choice in Kagemush, though.

Why a highly unlikely reunion, did they have a fallout?

Yes, they did have a falling out of some kind during the filming of Red Beard in 1965.

As much as I've loved Mifune's work, I think Nakadai was more suited for this role. He has that strong yet vulnerable presence that was required. Mifune, even when he has played "weak" characters, is still like a lion and had he been offered the role I think he may have taken it in the wrong direction.

I'm sure he'd have been fine as Hidetora.

Another interesting choice would have been Rentaro Mikuni as Hidetora.
