Anybody else here George's commentary? It's got to be one of the worst I've heard. Several minute gaps in between monologue's, in which he says such insightful things as "I like to use close ups for more suspense". I hope he is not completely fluent in English (though his pronunciation was fine) b/c if he is, he is du-uh-um. Sucks b/c I wanted to hear a gregariously loquacious and articulate commentary for this classic action movie. What a let down.
Anyone hear any other commentaries that were as underwhelming as this one?
Yea, I heard it before and listened last night again. Just about as bad as Rambo II, probably worse. My favorite part is when he when Stallone says the tagline and he's like, "that iz thee taglyne that sohld tha moovee. I'm the disease and he's the cure." LO-feriggin-L, he got the tagline assbackwards and said Sly was the disease!
Later, he jokingly, though in a dead serious tone, says he was hoping the film would win some oscars. Afterward he rebuffs himself, but I'm snickering going, it got showered at the razzies! I wish he'd have mentioned that!
I loved the commentary for Rambo 2 and Cobra. I love how in Rambo 2 he discuses how the whole film felt like managing an army. I loved the anecdotes on Acapulco, shooting the legendary close up arming scene in a hotel (due to weather conditions) and finally how the helicopter chase sequence alternated between crane, 2nd helicopeter etc etc.
I love how in the Cobra commentary he talks about how they needed to take a part of a footpath out to shoot the opening sequence. I love how he makes self depreciating comments at all the "unintended" pepsi commercials. I also really like how he gets into the movie and into Stallone's sequences.
You have to understand, these movies (Cobra and Rambo 2) are the absolute paramount accomplishments of movie making. Nothing will ever surpass this. No amount of cgi or effects or $ thrown at the screen will ever shine a torch to the genuine visceral dedication, love and devotion that went into making these cinema events in the mid 80's. You can't blame Cosmatos for getting into his movies so much that he forgets to narrate. Why? Because the movies themselves are mesmerizing masterpieces that draw you in on every sense.
Cinema peaked in the 1980's. Say what you want. Lament what you want. Critisize what you want, but the art of cinema has peaked. It peaked over 20 years ago when giants of the screen were making masterpieces on every level (sound design, music score, acting, direction, casting and location).
I'm just happy it has been documented and filmed, so that we can re-live it over and over and over again.
He did explain the logistics very well of those films. I was hoping he'd have something to say about the story/characters, but I suppose it just confirms that he was ghost directing for Stallone as a traffic cop (as he has been said to have.)
I agree, great action films, Rambo 2 is one of my all-time favorites. I hope to one day see it on film (as in actual film in a theater) with a massive sound system for Goldsmith's paramount music.
Agreed. I found the trilogy at a really low price, and watched on consecutive nights. I Thoroughly enjoyed Sly's commentary for "First Blood".-The story with the boar, the one at the bar, and all the stunts he did, the casting and script development. David Morrell's commentary was good as well.
Part II's commentary however, was terrible. I stopped watching when Rambo is in the cesspool, and the director mentions that they created the swine waste effect with instant coffee. It seemed like at times he forgot what he was doing, and vaguely remembered details of the production. I put the Out of the Blu trivia track instead.
The director for Rambo III, though not very loquacious, offers more interesting facts. Sly's stunt work was impressive, particularly the stick fight and the sheep game.
A worse commentary is Rob Reiner's commentary for When Harry Met Sally. There are long gaps where he doesn't say anything (I think the longest is 12 minutes) and then he'll just say things like, "That was a particularly cold day." What a waste. And in his This Is Spinal Tap commentary, he starts off by saying he doesn't agree with the idea of commentaries because it's like giving away the magic tricks. LOL. What magic tricks does he think he pulled off in Spinal Tap??
