'What does it mean to be expendable?'

The chick asked Rambo what does that word mean and gave a wrong answer sort of. He said expendable is when someone invites you to a party and it doesn't matter if you don't show up. Or you won't be missed. But a better definition is you wouldn't be invited in the first place or at all. Right? He tried to be too complicated. He should just have said he was left for dead or something.

Haha! I guess you have a point. The scene is a bit stretched .... But Stallone was on fire in his career... You gotta let him have moments like that! :-)

reply

Well not really. Being expendable as a person means you are a resource that can be used up without much concern, but you're still a resource. If you weren't invited to the party, you'd be useless.

It's like, a host invites bob to a party, knowing everyone expects Bob to be there and they all know him. if Bob didn't show up, people would be upset.

The same host invites Jimmy, knowing he doesn't really know anybody, but he'll bring another bottle of booze and he's not offensive. But nobody will be upset if he doesn't show, and there's plenty of booze.

If somebody isn't invited, they're not involved at all....

Yes, you explain exactly all that to the Asain chick who's is not that great with English to begin with. Especially when she died later. You're complicating the word as well. Every other movie has kept it simple like what I mentioned above, Cheers.

Well, no, I would say the line he says in the movie, because that makes sense---instead of making it wrong by saying what you suggested. Cheers up your a$$

No you

Rambo is a fighter, not a talker.

reply

He can be. You saw it when he spoke with Troutman at the end of both movies. And the later movies too.

I think Rambo gives the most simplistic and perfect example with the party analogy. At the end of the day, he's sacrificial. (Doesn't matter if the guest shows up or not to the party/doesn't matter if Rambo lives or dies)

A prime example of simpler is better in this case. Oddly enough, this scene ALWAYS stuck with me since I was a child. Didn't know what the hell expendable meant but when Rambo explained it, I automatically understood it and felt sorry for him, especially since he was self-aware of it.

Not as simple as being left to get captured or for dead like what really happened. So youre overthinking it too. Good luck
