I really came away with mixed feelings about Phillip Glass's score. I felt that in a way, it captured the rush of emotions that Mishima probably felt in his art and life, but also, well... to be blunt, those damn bells! Glass went crazy with those stupid things, sometimes I thought that I was listening to a Christmas song.
Anyone else got an opinion?

lmfao, you have a good point about the bells(at points, it did feel a little christmasy. lol). i did like the score though.. i think it's his best soundtrack, but i'm not sure if it's the best 'thing' he's ever done. glassworks was okay.. and music with changing parts was also really good.

I absolutely love the score, along with Kundun and Koyaanisqatsi, it's Glass' best film music!
"Nothing ever changes, black, white, fat, thin, older, or younger....nothing changes"
I never would of thought of Glass, but I guess it makes sense. A Western composer who uses minimalism, which in a way reflects the clash between Mishima's anti-Westernization politics and pro-Western lifestyle.

shareWith Glass you get Glass and it is up to the moviemakers to decide whether whatever he will turn in will be appropriate, because however adeptly he adapts his style to the material, it will still be foremost his style.
I have yet to watch the film but I'm listening to the score right now... My comments are of his work and his work paired with films generally.

Agreed. Glass is Glass, and his music in this movie reflects the idea of the singular, distinctive artistic vision of Mishima.

Actually, I don't see anything humorous in the statement "phillip glass is god-awful. loved the movie despite the music." So you mean you don't want to be taken seriously. Okay.

The score is brilliant, but it's too manipulative. I mean if it was dialed down or used more subtlely in some scenes maybe that would help. Or even maybe some variations of it. But no, Glass and Schrader keep blasting it as loud as possible. It's semi-omnipresent. The narrative itself is enough to stir up my emotions, but then that score makes it all seem so transparent and deliberate.
With that being said, the film and its score are both amazing.

I saw it in the theater when it came out and just rented it 23 years later. I didn't remember the score. It's like having knitting needles stuck in your ears while you're trying to watch the movie. It's so intrusive, it's as if Phillip Glass is trying to prevent you from paying any attention to the film. Does robot carnival music ever make for a good film score?

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I do have "Kronos Quartet Performs Philip Glass", which contains a version of the soundtrack that's just a string quartet. It's one of my favorite pieces of music. Might want to give that a go.
