I remember how disappointed I was when I first heard Tina Turner would be in this film in spite of next to no acting experience. Does anyone know specifically why she was chosen?

shareGeorge Miller and his writing team used Tina Turner as a reference for the character of Aunty during the writing process. Turner had lived through a hellish 16 year marriage and had survived 7 years in the wilderness during which she was reduced to performing in hotels and McDonalds' conventions.
Her comeback in 1984 was nothing short of spectacular and Miller felt that Turner embodied all that was necessary to portray this leader of a post-apocalyptic town. When it came time for casting, they approached Turner and she had a few weeks off from touring so they cast her. I thought she was fantastic and after the location shifts from Bartertown, the film suffers badly and never recovers.

Did we watch the same movie? I thought she was terrible, one of the most unintentionally hilarious performances I've ever seen.
Everyone else however, was amazing...
