Well, out of the 4 person team (that went onto the alien ship), one was female.
Besides that, some of the team could have been homosexual.
And 3 aliens for a 4 person team.... I wonder why there wasn't one for each person.
And the male aliens were hardly in the film at all. Obviously the main point of the film was to present the female alien. The film is about male longing and loneliness.

Maybe she was naturally female while the males were naturally male. Thus, while their forms--i e, appearances--came from someone else's mind, their sex predated their appearance.
