Sorry, but no dice. It hasn't been released on DVD and no plans to anytime soon. What really bites is that it's out of print on VHS, so I working off an old HBO recording.

I used to have it taped off HBO or Showtime too, but me and my brother and sister watched it so much that it BROKE! I'm so upset...I love this movie. I also would like it on DVD.

Clearly Tri-Star doesn't think this movie is the cult movie that it is (do they even exist anymore?)

I saw this on TBS last week after going about 10 years or more without having seen this...there was one summer when this would be playing along with "Just One of the Guys", "Teen Witch", and "Fast Food" on HBO every afternoon. Jeez, that's closer to 15 years! Anyway, after seeing this movie again I can see why it had (and still has) such an appeal. The idea that adolescents can just take off and avoid authority figures amidst a Pat Benatar-driven score resonated with every 10-16 year old kid who saw this when it came out. I'm 24 now and this movie reminded me of those halcyon summer days of my youth. Although now that I'm older, some of the magic is gone...I mean, this whole movie was based on a $600 scooter or something, right?
I read someone's post earlier that Helen Slater or Pat Benatar wasn't too pleased with this movie? Come on! This is the kind of movie that people can milk for years doing conventions or something...I think a dvd release of this film could reach a new generation of kids and find a new appreciation. Helen Slater has never looked better, and this movie contains Christian Slater's best role since "Gleaming the Cube." Yes, that was a joke. I'm glad that there are other people who remember this film and hold it in high esteem like I do.
As far as that dvd release goes, keep your fingers crossed. If "The Monster Squad" can finally get released, this can't be far behind. Just don't expect THX mastering and multiple commentaries...this kinda movie would be put out for like $8 or something, no-frills. But that's all we really want anyway!
FAIR IS FAIR! FAIR IS FAIR!

Anyone who want a copy of this- check out Ebay. Decently recorded dvds and original vhs.
Or, we can continue to push for an official dvd release with extras (cut scenes, trailers, interview, ect.)

It's currently running on HDNet, so hopefully you will see some nice widescreen transfers on DVD-R soon.

reply

That HDNet version of BJ is great!

Anamorphic means it'll play "squeezed" on a normal tv (if your DVD player is set as if it's connected to a 16:9 screen) and widescreen on a widescreen tv (no bars, not stretched). It sounds like what you've achieved is widescreen, but it's letterbox 4:3, which isn't anamorphic. Instead of using the full 720x480 resolution for image, you're using something like 720x360 or less.

I just started looking around today when it wasn't available at Netflix or Blockbuster. There have been a lot of really crap movies that sudios have already released, this on would sell just as well as "just one of the guys" or similar films, quite possibly better.

Those DVD's on ebay look to be pretty crap quality, hope they reaease it soon, but seeing as the first post in this thread was 4 years ago, I'm not going to hold my breath.
