Originally Rated R?

I haven't seen this movie in years. Were any cuts made to make it PG-13. What caused this to be R in the first place?

They say it was the language that about got it an R rating, but they appealed it. The reason for that is probably because they use the word f ucker twice in the movie, and today you can use the F word 3 times and maintain a PG-13 rating, but back then PG-13 rating was new, only about a year old and they were probably still very cautious with everything they put in them and such.

I really did not find anything in the movie that should have gotten it an R rating. Even for its time I thought it was a very tame movie. It had a strong message of empowerment to deliver and it really made its mark among those who saw it at the time.

They also use the GD word also which for the 80's would have meant instant Rated R

How times have really changed. GD used to get an instant Rated R while these days, GD and *beep* can be said at least 50 times in a brain dead movie with no problems. At least Billie Jean made you think and the GD was negligible.

Not sure where you got that info, but there were plenty of PG films back then that used that word.
In fact Molly Ringwald utters the "f" word once in Sixteen Candles! (Had the PG 13 rating existed at the time, it probably would have gotten that)

It seems to me that if anything, ratings were a little more loose back in those days. You'd occasionally see brief nudity in PG films (Kramer Vs. Kramer for instance), and a little profanity in G rated movies. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture, 2001 A Space Odyssey for instance)

Yeah I think everyone has it backwards. Movies like Incredible Hulk and Iron Man and all these silly comic book movies are all PG-13 when in the 80's they would have gotten a PG. The newest Indiana jones movie was PG-13 and it wa sthe tamest of them all. Films like Beverly Hills Dog or whatever it was called gets a PG when it should have been G.
