Why did Hubie slither away when Billie Jean was confronting his father? Did he realize what a dick his father was or did he just not want to get in trouble?

I always reckoned it was the former because Hubie didn't know his father tried to rape Billie Jean, his father just said they tried to rob the store, and he wouldn't be idiot enough to tell his son what REALLy went on...so for a while, Hubie was as clueless as everybody else.

No I think he realized what his father had done, that's why he smirked when he got kneed in the jewels.

He finally realized that his father had been lying to him. He told everyone that Billie Jean robbed him when really he tried to rape her and then gave her hush money. Hubie realized that his father wasn't the victim that he'd been trying to portray himself as. Billie Jean was the victim. I think Hubie was ashamed of his father's actions and thought he got what he deserved.

Besides what others have said, I believe he idolized his dad so when he found out who he really was he woke up and left him to burn for his sins in a great "joan of arc".
